I like how in Nepali, my native language, we have three different words for “heart” with a subtle difference in the meaning of each. It adds a poetic touch to everyday language.

The first word for heart is मुटु or mutu which refers to the literal organ. One might say मुटु दुख्यो or mutu dukhyo which literally translates to “my heart hurts” to express emotional pain so unbearable that it seems to hurt the physical heart. Funnily enough mutu is often used in a casual tone in an informal conversation because it has a strangely loving connotation to it. One might call somebody they adore मेरो मुटु or mero mutu which literally translates to “my heart”.

The second word for heart is मन or mann which refers to the will of a person or the spirit of a person. It is our mann which we seek to satisfy because mann is also a verb “to like/love”. When we say मलाई मन पर्छ or malai mann parchha (I like it) we are really saying “It aligns with my heart” or “It pleases my heart”. 

The third word for heart is हृदय or hridaya which is more than the heart but not quite the soul. It possesses a very humanistic connotation. It refers to the personalized being of a person. Hridaya is your truest being, that which makes you you simply because you exist the way you do. In Dr. Seuss terms, your hridaya would be you at your youest you.
