A unique early Yuan painting that blends Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhist iconography with Song painting tradition. This polychrome painting on cotton fabric depicts the Lokapala Kubera, who was famed as Bestower of Wealth, Guardian of the North, Lord of the Yaksas and God of Buried Treasures. The God is depicted wearing elaborate Chinese armor, seated in a position of royal ease on the back of a blue lion with a turquoise mane, surrounded by a halo of flames, holding in his left hand a mongoose vomiting precious jewels.

The central figure of Kubera is surrounded by his army of demonic Yaksas commanded by eight generals on horseback, demonic musicians, flying Apsaras and the Gods of Thunder, Lightning, Rain and Wind, all of these Buddhist figures and Gods moving in an animated and often humorous fashion amidst churning storm clouds above the peaks of Mount Meru, while soldiers fire arrows at winged “Thunders” who fly across the top of the painting. This painting includes a Garuda figure, a being not known to have been depicted in any Song period painting.
