Hi there! I am very interested in learning about Nepal and the Nepali language. I am wondering if there are any customs of speaking or interacting that are unique to Nepal (or just different from the "Western" world). For example, what are the differences between having a conversation with someone from Nepal and having one with someone from the US? Are they more open, more private, more formal or informal? Any ideas or help is very much appreciated! Thanks :)
Hello! One of the things that I have noticed is the way Nepali and other south Asian countries give relation to anyone they talk to. For example, they will call the shopkeeper “Dai” (big brother in Nepali) or “Bhai” (younger brother in Nepali) or “uncle” etc. Same goes for other female relations as well. If you see an old lady out on the street, a Nepali will probably call her “Aama” (mother) even if they might not have met her before. This kind of a closeness is missing from the US and other western countries which I think is unfortunate.
I’ve found Nepali people to be more private and formal while speaking with strangers when compared to the people of the western world. But again this is just my experience, and I would advice you to not completely rely on it. Also, most Nepali people are quite close to their families and will know their second cousins and great aunts and far away relatives unlike most families in the US.
