Himalayan Girls Club is a starting feminist group, with a special focus on Nepali girls & women in the diaspora. We are organizing to build political consciousness through shared experience and critical dialogue, following similar approaches by other feminists of color. Due to the lack of options otherwise, we feel it is necessary to begin with an online community. At this moment, we want to examine and interrogate the specificities of being young Nepali women in the midst of a hetero-patriarchal world. Our first publication will shine a creative light to the politics of home, belonging, and what it means (or doesn’t mean) to be an “independent” Nepali girl. In what ways do we navigate boundaries, choices, desires & dreams in both private and public areas (home, community, friends and relationships, school/academics, etc.)? Do we have free will now that we’ve grown up or live in a “western” society? Or are we still constrained by a unique set of limitations and expectations – if so, how? This is a collection that emphasizes storytelling and analysis directly from our own experiences. Feel free to use the above options, or explore any other sort of outlet you have in mind as well. It’s all up to you! Please e-mail any questions and/or entries for selection to himalayangirlsclub@gmail.com. If the file(s) exceed the size limit, you can upload your materials on Google drive and share it with us. To ensure privacy, we can work with you individually if you prefer anonymity or an alias name on the published format. Entries in Nepali (or other non-English languages) are allowed and do not require translation. Deadline is September 18, 2016.

Hi!! :) i messaged you a couple of weeks ago regarding my Everest base camp trek and what to do prior to that. I've decided that visiting Chitwan national park would be amazing however I've also seen that a lot of packages involve elephant riding which is beyond cruel and I don't want to support that. Do you know if I can just go to Chitwan and book certain activities like day treks in the jungle and jeep tours? Thank you!! Jess xxx I’m not too sure because I’ve never been to Chitwan, but I know they have canoe tours (the crocodiles will be there too!). Check out Nepal tourism board’s website or maybe email a travel agency that you might find interesting and ask them about it. In another note, it’s fine if you don’t want to do elephant riding; that’s your personal choice. Elephant riding might seem cruel but for a lot of people in rural areas that are affected by extreme poverty, that’s their only source of income. Things are rarely black and white in a country like Nepal, and I’m absolutely not saying you should do it but I don’t want to make statements that can hurt the local tourism and their efforts on conservation either. They have been working on treating the animals better and it has gotten a lot better over the years. The Elephant’s treatment is a lot more humane in Nepal (specially in Chitwan) compared to a lot of other places. Perhaps you can read more about their efforts and see exactly how the animals are treated. Revenues from the elephant safari goes towards the upkeep of the sanctuary and surrounding areas which houses many endangered species. Of course it’s not all perfect an there are companies that might be over working or even abusing the elephants, you just have to be wary of them and avoid them at all cost. You can always make donations to the sanctuary and help their conservation efforts if you are truly concerned.

| About MeI grew up in a small town helping my parents on their farm. There I developed my love for nature and a desire to explore. Now I travel around the world photographing nature. InterestsI love to travel. I have been everywhere, from Alaska to Zimbabwe. For every trip I keep a travel log of my adventures and capture the world as I see it. Check out my photo gallery to get a glimpse into where I have been. And drop me a line if want to find out more. I always love to hear from fellow travelers. |
I am looking for my next big adventure. There are still many places I want to visit and even more to which I want to return. The camera is charged up and my backpack is packed; drop me a line if you know where I should go next.
