This Nepali girl is fighting for gay rights in her country

“My parents are uneducated. They’ve never been to school, and they couldn’t believe my sexuality was natural. They thought it was a habitual thing and that when I got married it would stop.”

When Apeksha was 16 years old, her parents banned her from going to school and tried to force her into an arranged marriage in an attempt to “cure” her of her sexuality. Now, she’s fighting for LGBT equality in Nepal.

Paubhā (पौभा) is a cloth painting in the tradition of the Newāri people of Nepāla. The base is a canvas treated with a mixture of glue and clay and polished smooth. The pigments used are from natural mineral and vegetable sources. Both Buddhist and Hindu themes can be seen. This art form is analogous to the Tibetan thangka.

The city of Kathmandu is today the capital of Nepal. This status, however, was only conferred on it during the 18th century. 1769 is traditionally regarded as the year that Nepal was unified by Prithvi Narayan Shah, who then chose Kathmandu as the capital of his kingdom.  Nevertheless, the history of Kathmandu stretches much further back in time, and many of its sacred sites were established and built centuries before the unification of Nepal.
