Panchaibaja
In the past, the cities of Kathmandu Valley were populated mostly by Newars while Bahuns and Chhetris lived in the rural areas below the valley rim. During Bahun-Chhetri weddings a sacrificial fireplace would be set up in the yard under a canopy of bamboos and the panchaibaja would be played. The painting shows a band playing the damaha, karnal, tyamko, jhyamta and sanai leading the procession. Behind the musicians are people carrying the bhar and kalash. Next come the bride and groom borne on palanquins, followed by the groom’s party of relatives and friends. The fields covered with mustard flowers indicate that the wedding is taking place in winter.
