It’s the same in Nepal

dalitdiscrimination:

I am an orthopedic surgeon from Nepal. I was born in a remote Nepali village in an extremely poor Family. My father ploughed landlords’ land to feed his ten children. It is nothing short of a miracle and god’s grace that I was able to study in one of Asia’s best medical schools.

I am a cheerful person and make friends easily. But being called names, being hit for no reason, having to wash diseases after eating in a hotel, and not being allowed to enter the houses of upper caste friends was normal in our village. At ten, I was selected to study on a full scholarship to study in a boarding school, in a neighboring town. At one point during school, nearly forty of my classmates weren’t talking to me. That’s more than two-thirds the entire population. I was only 11 years old away from any support. Thank god, that I fought through that and I am now a surgeon trained from one of the best centers in this region. I never lied about my caste but it did make me miserable. I still get patients who ask my caste. It’s a very common question in Nepal. I smile to them and tell them I am ‘untouchable’ and if they still want to be operated by me. Almost always uncomfortable silence ensues.

Are you nepali?

Yes. Also Canadian. I feel comfortable saying “eh” after every sentence because it reminds me of saying “hai” after every Nepali sentence. I also say “sorry” very often (even to inanimate objects after I bump into them…I can’t help it)

Easier for India to colonize Nepal. theres been proof of Indian politicians(idk which one I can't find the article) paying madheshis to start riots/ protests. So now India is using these protests as an excuse to not sent their supplies with their employees to nepal bc it's "not safe" So basically India is not giving us supplies until we change our districts. But I think madheshis are upset bc pahadis are moving to mahdesh land. Which I don't get bc they're selling their land to pahadis??

Yeah exactly. India want Nepal’s national resources so they’re using these Madhesi separatist groups as puppets to get their way with Nepal. Lots of Pahadis (hill-people) have been living in southern Nepal for decades (and probably centuries), and in a lot of cases the rich ones did enslave Madhesi people and treat them like shit. I think a lot of Madhesi people are speaking up and wanting this recognized and maybe some reconciliation? idk Madhesi issues are valid and there should be government laws to help Nepali Madhesis. But these Madhesi separatist groups aren’t doing shit for that. They just want power and a pat on the back from India or something…I’m not sure. How is any of this actually helping the common Madhesi people?? You’re living in Nepal and there is no rule that says Madhesis can’t live up north or Pahadis can’t live in the south. Corruption and hunger for power is a lethal combination.

This is something I read online idk if it's true but my dad also told me the same thing. I'm pretty sure you know this but, Nepal divided the districts vertically that way supplies coming in from india(since we don't have an ocean) will be easier to transport to northern nepal bc of all the mountains. If we made the districts horizontally northern nepal would have a MAJOR shortage of supplies. But India wants us to have the districts horizontally so that, eventually, it will be

Yes, you are right. King Mahendra (father of the late King Birendra) was a dictator, a tyrant, and a royal asshole, but one thing that he did right during his rule was deliberately make Nepal’s aanchals (states/provinces) vertical and have vertical borders so that they would be connected from China to India with Nepal in-between so that India would have a more difficult time bullying us (and believe me India loves to bully us). It was pretty much to make sure that even if India blocked the border in the south, Nepal would still be open in the north (although it’s much more difficult and costly because of the mountains). And also that if any of the states tried to cut off supplies to northern Nepal (as is the case right now) they wouldn’t succeed because there would be other open paths.

I don’t know why India loves to see Nepal suffer. Like they have a giant country with lots and lots of resources..can’t they just leave us alone?

About Me

I grew up in a small town helping my parents on their farm. There I developed my love for nature and a desire to explore. Now I travel around the world photographing nature.

Interests

I love to travel. I have been everywhere, from Alaska to Zimbabwe. For every trip I keep a travel log of my adventures and capture the world as I see it.

Check out my photo gallery to get a glimpse into where I have been. And drop me a line if want to find out more. I always love to hear from fellow travelers.

Aspirations

I am looking for my next big adventure. There are still many places I want to visit and even more to which I want to return. The camera is charged up and my backpack is packed; drop me a line if you know where I should go next.
